Artis lecture Review:Jeremy Stern

Listening to Jeremy Stern talk about his piece “Following” made me want to become more interested in the Northern Nevada area. He said he drove all over the highway recording sounds from different places so that once you walk into the space (sheppard gallery) It would be like walking through the whole Northern nevada region, and to some extent it was. using the yecon and arduino was a first for him, he has used maps in the past for other various art works but this time, he created a digital pathway map.”By moving across the gallery’s floor, whose grid is transposed to scale onto a common Rand McNally road map, visitors will alter the composition of sounds made site-specific to the Truckee Meadows in which Reno sits”, said Jeremy. I was more interested in this lecture because I actually got to be apart of his works in progress helping him paint the walls of the gallery, Seeing an exhibit through from start to finish was a new and exciting experience that i am very thankful jeremy allowed for. His work shows a lot of potential and is different that a lot of other artists out there.

Gallery Review: Animating Lights by Leo Villareal

Leo Villareal uses Led lights to create a unique experience that can be felt throughout the gallery. The lights in motion create shapes, objects, and varius colors essentially making what they calles light sculptures. He made a wonderful artistic display brought on by using nothing but lights and his own created software, that automatically changes the design of the LEDs. It was a magnificent display that I felt was more of a great show than an art exhibit. Walking in to the space feels like a whole new worls, surrounded by an array of beautiful colors, one could get lost in the bright lights and just stare as the lights change. This exhibit was an extrodinary display of using technology to create art. It is pushing the boundaries of what can be done and starting a path for more creative and technilogical art pieces to come.

This past week I tested out my eyecon with the dancers. I feel like I am stuck at the moment although the songs changed and they just danced to whatever was on, I feel like I can not get as much space as I need to make the songs work better, The web cam can only capture so much, however this next week I am going to bring a laptop out into other spaces with the dancers and see if that can help with my problems. But that aside I was excited that the eyecon is doing what I had planned on!

Eyecon Progress week two

This week I worked on choosing the songs, playing with the field and where the dancers should be placed. I also messed with volume control so depending on where the dancer is located within the field the song either gets louder or softer. For the first dancer the songs chosen were til the world ends by Britney Spears, King of anything by Sara Barrellis, and Chicken Fried by the Zach Brown band. For the second dancer the three songs chosen were E.T. by Katy Perry, Sofi needs a Ladder by Deadmau5, and Felt good on my lips by Tim Mcgraw.

Eyecon Progress Week one

This week I learned the Eyecon program. I got four boxes working all with different sound. My first box i used the field element and had it colored red, then I used the 4 Honky-Tonk noise so that every time I entered the red field that noise played.The second box I created was green and I placed it directly below the red box, I assigned this box with the 3 electric Grand Piano noise. The third box I created was blue, I placed it across from the red box, but made the field slightly bigger, and this box was assigned the 18 percussive organ noise. Then the last box I created was white I made it a rectangle and just placed it across in the middle, it was assigned the 12 Xylophone noise and played constantly since I was in the middle of the screen. I also spent much of this week reading up about Eyecon and looking at many projects online. I used this site a lot http://frieder-weiss.de/eyecon/index.html to help me learn more about the program. Jelly Fish Final

These are the three jellyfish lit up and installed in the 208A Gallery inside the Church of Fine Arts Building. They each have their own Arduino and LEDs which are programmed to create the lighting effects that are taking place within the space. There is also an ocean waves soundtrack playing in the background. This project took many many hours and a lot of frustration, but I am very pleased with how it ended up. Although we were only able to complete three jellyfish, it works within the small space and the lights reflected off the walls add for an underwater feel.

Eyecon proposal

For the second half of the semester I am going to work with the eyecon. I want to create a musical “dance battle”. To do this I am using two dancers and two computers (so each computer can track a dancer), and depending on who is in movement and where in their gris they are located a certain song or beat will play, and if the other dancer begins there set of songs will play. Each dancer will be assignmed about 3 songs so the their three songs will change depending on location, and same with the other dancer. and hopefully it will end up that whoever is in motion the longest will go through their songs the longest wins.

Jellyfish Update

The pas two weeks we spent countless hours reprinting our pepakura outlines for our jellyfish, folding and pasting. It took about 17 hours to complete one jellyfish, it looks really cool though! Our initial goal was to have 10 jellyfish installed into the gallery, but seeing how long it has taken to create one, we have downsized to 5 jellyfish but made them a lot larger. We have also began making two jellyfish at a time rather than just one, it is faster and will hopefully make the project at hand a lot easier.

Pepakura Update!

Today we made some good progress we got our jellyfish down to 33 objects and only about 800 folds, which is much much lower than before! We test printed it to get a feel for the sizing, a normal 8.5×11 paper will not cut it, we need to work much larger, which will make the jellyfish look better and will be easier for us to work with.

3-D Model of our jellyfish

We found a program called Pepakura, it makes templates for paperwork models from 3-d files, right now we are attempting to load are 3-d image of the jellyfish to this program to see if we can print it out to build our fish much better and stronger than our last couple paper models. The picture above is a screen shot of how the program works. However we are having a hard time getting our pieces to come out so smooth, it might be because the jellyfish pieces are so small? However we are working on troubleshooting this problem!
